1. The Age of Leverage

1. The Age of Leverage

Why should you write on the internet? Module 1 has your answer.

We’re living in the Age of Leverage, a time of unprecedented opportunity for creators. Good ideas can be shared at no marginal cost. Your work can spread around the globe while you sleep. It’s time to harness that potential.

After introducing the course, David shares how writing online opened new doors and widened his world. You’re then given an overview of each course module, including your Serendipity Vehicle and Personal Monopoly.

2. Make Your Serendipity Vehicle

2. Make Your Serendipity Vehicle

Blogging isn’t dead. In fact, it’s just in its infancy.

Module 2 introduces you to the Seven Principles of Content Creation.

Your blog is a Serendipity Vehicle. The place where your distinct voice emerges through sharing and receiving feedback on your work. There are no quick promises. But consistent production will give you an edge for spreading ideas and connecting with others. David explains how he sparked an audience by applying these principles over time. He also reviews four common concerns about writing online.

3. Create Your Online Home

3. Create Your Online Home

Put away your resume paper and fire up your new website.

Module 3 shows you the importance of your Start Here page, which is your resume, business card, and portfolio all wrapped into one. It’s the lobby of your online home, the first thing people will see when they “walk in.”  David shares the keys to a stellar Start Here page, and gives strategies for narrowing your site’s focus. You’ll learn about the Paradox of Specificity, the internet’s power to match, and a philosophy for personal growth via writing.

4. Set Up Your Distribution System

4. Set Up Your Distribution System

“Email is the next big thing.”

Module 4 explains the underrated power of email distribution to share your ideas, stay connected with people, and receive feedback at scale.

Use your email newsletter to create a distribution channel that you own. A highlight reel for your best work that leads to new ideas, connections and opportunities. David then introduces his favorite concept in Write of Passage – the Content Triangle, a process for abundant content creation in the digital age.

5. Learn to Write Clearly & Persuasively

5. Learn to Write Clearly & Persuasively

David uses Module 5 to take you behind the scenes of his writing process.

Using his article on cooperation as a case study, David demonstrates his process for outlining an article. You’ll see how he takes an article from casual conversation to finished product — outlining, source gathering, writing, refining, and sharing. You’ll see why modern pieces of writing aren’t merely written, but assembled. And you just might learn why people in New York City are so rude.

6. Connect with Anyone

6. Connect with Anyone

Networking has flipped in the digital age. Module 6 gives you the new method for connecting with peers and thinkers you admire.

Put your writing to work as a beacon for finding and meeting interesting people. David shares the concept of a “third door” for building real relationships with industry leaders. He tells the story of his worst networking mistakes so you don’t repeat them. And you’ll hear about the importance of specificity and reciprocity when asking for a meeting. Also included: six guidelines for de-risking your cold email outreach.

7. Build Your Personal Monopoly

7. Build Your Personal Monopoly

Ideas can travel faster and farther than ever before. But what do you want to launch into orbit?

Module 7 walks you through building your personal monopoly – a narrow area of expertise that emerges from your unique intersection of abilities. David reviews how to define and refine your personal monopoly. You’ll then learn how to use that specific knowledge to build a following and gain leverage, hearing several examples of distinct paths carved by online creators. Building off of principles from the previous modules, you’ll understand how to capitalize on the massive opportunities of the bi-directional media landscape.

Bonus: Information Capture

Bonus module: Information Capture

Writing is so much more than putting words on the page.

Prolific writing can only happen when you write from abundance. New ideas are born from the experiences you have and the ideas you consume. But you need a system to organize facts, observations, and epiphanies.

In the Information Capture bonus module, David reviews how to find, save, organize, and retrieve high-quality information. He’ll share his method for structuring digital notes with Hot and Cold notebooks. With it, you’ll set up your own digital note-taking system, which you’ll add to throughout the course.

Your new information capture system will fuel a wealth of new ideas.

Frequent Asked Questions

What is this course about?

This course will help you accelerate your career by writing online. It will give you the tools to create and distribute your ideas to people in your professional network, so you can create personal and professional opportunities for yourself.

By the end of the course, you will have a proven system for writing, a website where anybody can find you online, a series of published articles with your best ideas, and a personal email newsletter to distribute them. By becoming a prolific writer, you’ll publish a collection of articles, the benefits of which compound over time. Armed with those assets, you’ll learn how to use the Internet to connect with people who can change the trajectory of your life. By transforming from a passive consumer to an active creator, you’ll learn how to attract far more opportunities than you do today.

Why should I take this course now?

Now is the perfect time to start writing. The number of people consuming information online is rising much faster than the number of people creating it at a high-level. You are not too late. The tools to organize, publish, and distribute knowledge have improved dramatically in just the past five years. You no longer need to be an expert to create your own website or start an email newsletter. But it still requires some strategy, accountability, and support to go through all the steps needed to set up these platforms and link them together. In the future, we will look back at this moment and marvel at all the people who took advantage of this explosion of online publishing, and started now. This course is like a virtual writing group that not only keeps you on track with your writing, but also everything else you need to get it out into the world.

Are there any prerequisites for this course?

This course does not have any formal prerequisites. With that said, you will have the best results in the course if you can devote the time and energy needed to develop your writing skills and share your knowledge with the world. Above all, this course is about taking action. The lessons and exercises provide a step-by-step roadmap to producing and distributing your ideas. The more aligned you are with that goal, the better.

What happens on the live group calls?

This course uses a “flipped classroom” model. In a traditional classroom, the teacher teaches you the material live, in the form of lectures. Then, you do the homework on your own. This course is the opposite. The lectures are pre-recorded videos you can watch on your own time and at your own pace. The group calls are a place to ask questions, work through writing exercises, and receive personalized feedback from classmates. On Wednesdays, we’ll review new material and discuss the major themes of each module. On Fridays we’ll focus on the mechanics of writing. Between Friday and the following Monday, you’ll complete a draft of your writing deliverable for the week.  The Monday calls are a check-in, where you’ll be able to ask questions, speak with other course participants, and collect feedback on your writing.

When are the live group calls?

The course has sixteen live Zoom sessions across five weeks. These take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm–8:30pm EST, and Fridays at 12:00pm EST.  We highly encourage all students to attend our kickoff call on March 2nd at 7:00pm EST, even if it means staying up late or waking up early. It’s energizing to see the entire student body together as a group as we start the course. Course recordings and notes from the live sessions will be available within 12 hours for those who can’t attend live.

What if I can’t make the live sessions?

Write of Passage is designed to work with your schedule. We strongly encourage you to attend the live kickoff call on March 2nd at 7:00pm EST. We also encourage you to attend the other live calls, but it’s not a problem if you can’t. The main thing you’ll miss are the “breakout rooms”, where students give writing feedback in small Zoom groups. Otherwise, you’re able to watch the session recordings and participate in discussions and feedback on the forum. Some of our strongest students in past cohorts have missed the live calls, including those from the UK, Hungary, Nigeria, Poland, and Ukraine.

We also offer bonus live sessions on the weekends. We’ve expanded our offering to include calls on Saturday and Sunday:

  • Saturdays at 12:00pm EST, 5:00pm GMT we have live writing workshops (“Crossfit for Writing”). You’ll gather on Zoom to write the weekly assignment in a rapid-fire series of steps over two intense hours. You’ll also receive feedback from classmates as you go. It’s a lot of fun!
  • Throughout the week at various times you can join mentor-led discussion calls, known as Writing Groups. Students join for a 45 minute discussion about the week’s work, followed by 30 minutes of 1:1 writing feedback in breakout rooms. We’re offering 13 Writing Groups in Cohort 6, with options available for students across all time zones. You choose your group based on time zones and which mentor you’d like to work with.

I’m not an entrepreneur, freelancer, or senior level in my career — is this course right for me?

Absolutely. While the majority of Write of Passage students are at an advanced stage of their career, the walls that separated career categories are breaking down. Career paths are changing. Whether you plan to start your own business or not, writing on the Internet will give you magnificent leverage in your career. It will create serendipity, such as attracting new friends and professional opportunities you wouldn’t find otherwise. If you have ambitious plans for your future, this course is for you.

I run my own business, I’m a senior executive, or I’m already creating content – is this course right for me?

Perfect! We created the Premium Edition of this course (called “Accelewrite”) for people like you. It’s the fastest way to implement the techniques of publishing online. With bonus guest interviews and business-oriented advanced tutorials, and lifetime access to future cohorts, Premium Edition will help you reach your professional goals faster.

What’s the full difference between Essential Edition and Accelewrite (Premium Edition)?

Accelewrite (Premium Edition) and Essential Edition students both receive:

  • 9-module curriculum
  • Guided writing deliverables
  • Actionable templates
  • 5-week live cohort
  • Access to student-only online forum

All students will always have access to the course materials (video modules, session recordings, course forum, templates), indefinitely after the live sessions conclude.

Accelewrite (Premium Edition) students receive the following additional benefits:

  • Lifetime access to all future Write of Passage live cohorts
  • Exclusive guest interviews (ex: James Clear)
  • Advanced Tutorials (ex: How to Use Twitter)
  • Future updates to course content

How much access do I get to David?

I can’t promise that I’ll reply to every single message, but I will be active during the live sessions. I’ll answer questions, provide feedback, and share my private notes to address common pain points.

What kinds of industries or professions is this course geared towards?

Right now, only a handful of industries have fully migrated online. The more an industry touches the Internet, the more public the writers from that industry tend to be. On the digitally savvy  side of the spectrum, there are industries like venture capital where many of the top investors have built their reputations by writing online, which attracts a steady stream of investment opportunities.  In the middle, there are industries like financial planning, where financial advisors attract clients with personal blogs and email newsletter. Then, there are industries that are late to the Internet, such as energy, healthcare, and real estate. People are starving for quality information about these industries. The frontier is wide open for pioneers like you to settle the land and build an audience with little competition. We’re still in the early innings of the Internet migration, so now is the time to start writing.

What deliverables will I walk away with?

This course is all about taking action. It’s about giving you the foundation to accelerate your career by writing online. By the end of the course you will have (1) a professional website, (2) an information capture system, (3) a personal email list, and (4) a collection of published articles. You’ll also have a repeatable process for generating ideas, turning them into published pieces of writing, and getting them in front of like-minded people who can create opportunities for you.

Beyond the tangible items, you’ll also leave with new friends and connections from around the world. Write of Passage alums are a growing and visible presence in the “Twittersphere” and elsewhere around the Internet.

How much time can I expect to spend on coursework each week?

At least 7-10 hours per week, for the 5 weeks of the course. This course is a sprint, and you’ll be asked to write and publish more than you ever have before. The live sessions will be 90 minutes long. They’ll  take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings (EST), as well as midday on Fridays. We also offer bonus writing workshops on Saturdays, and mentor-led Writing Groups throughout the week. This course was created for ambitious and intellectually curious people, who have the discipline it takes to write online. The workload is intense, but you don’t need to take time off work to participate. The program is designed to slot into your current life and schedule. With that said, you’ll need to block off time each week for focused writing, collaboration, and individual course work. Growing up, your best teachers always pushed you harder than you would have pushed yourself. That’s what will happen in Write of PassageMost online courses don’t lead to results because they ask for too little from their students. But as you know, quick hacks and cheap tricks are ineffective. They don’t stand the test of time. This course is the opposite. There are no secrets or shortcuts. Instead, the course offers a proven roadmap for publishing and distributing ideas. Discipline, consistency, and persistence is the key to success in the course.

Couldn’t I find this material online for free?

The Internet is littered with excellent advice about writing, editing, and audience building. In fact, you can find much of it on my website for free. I encourage you to check it out. With that said, the majority of what you find online is superficial. It’s written by content marketers who are paid for mass appeal and quantity, not quality. Many of them are paid by the word, which means they have an incentive to rant and ramble. Even if they give you the “right answer,” it’s not worth very much without the structure and support needed to implement what you learn. Rather than spending years of your precious life searching for and reading those articles, you will find the best information distilled here into a coherent and actionable framework. Better yet, you’ll have a global community of writers who can support you emotionally and intellectually. By the end of the course, you will have a proven system for cultivating ideas, publishing articles, and sharing them with the people who matter most to you.

What’s included with tuition?

This course takes place online, so no travel is required. With your tuition, you’ll have lifetime access to all the pre-recorded video lectures, recordings of the live cohort sessions, prompts for the writing deliverables, and a private online forum where you’ll interact with your coursemates. You’ll retain access to the course materials and forum indefinitely after the course ends.

What’s your refund policy?

This investment is 100% risk-free. If you watch the video lessons, complete the deliverables, and still don’t find the course valuable, we’ll happily refund your full payment within 30 days of the start of the course.
